The greatest weight recorded for a Kodiak bear in the wild is 1656 lb 751 kg for a male shot at English Bay. Kodiak Island in 1894 by J C Tolman. The stretched skin (pegged to the side of a cabin on a frame and then weighted with rocks at the bottom edge for maximum effect) measured 13 ft 6in 4-12m from the tip of the nose to the root of the tail, and the hindfoot was 18in 46cm long (Phillips-Wolley. 1894).
The largest Kodiak bear ever held in captivity was a male at Cheyenne Mountain Zoological Park. Colorado, USA which scaled 1670 lb 757 kg at the time of its death on 22 September 1955 (William Meeker, pers. comm.). Unfortunately nothing is known about the physical condition of this animal (or its nose to tail length), but it was probably 'cage-fat'. The bear was received at the zoo as a cub direct from Kodiak Island on 29 June 1940.
'Sam' and 'Erskine'. twin Kodiak bears at Chicago Zoological Park. Illinois. USA were also very large. Sam, the smaller of the two - he could reach food suspended 10 ft 6in 3-2m above the ground with his mouth - recorded a posthumous weight of 1412 lb 640kg, and Erskine weighed an estimated 1600 lb) 726kg at the time of his death in c1957 (Robert Bean, pers. comm.).

I don't think it's correct, Bart The Bear was about 816kg, so it was probably the largest bear in captivity... And what about Goliath, an other huge kodiak bear?

The data source or published date is 1983 (Guinness). I'm not sure about Bart, I have read 1500 lbs but his exact peak weight IMO is unclear. Goliath should top all the Kodiak bears. If anyone has any updated Guinness book info they are welcomed to share it.
Side point, any posts made in this forum are to be done by members only. Nothing personal but it is forum policy. Apparently, the 'Guest' settings need more adjusting. The mistake is mine, the forum is still under MAJOR construction and for one person (now two) there is only so much that can be done. Nonetheless, I try to post interesting material to maintain and grow forum interest.

1983 continued.... The largest Kodiak bear ever held captive in a British zoo was probably a male called 'Nick' (one of the twins) received at London Zoo direct from N America on 29 January 1954 At the age of one year he scaled 595lb 270kg, and when he died at Whipsnade Zoo in October 1963 he recorded a posthumous weight of 1148lb 521kg. He could reach meat suspended 10ft 3in 12m from the ground. The closely related Peninsula giant bear (Ursus a. gyas) of the Alaska Peninsula and other parts of the slat.- has also been credited with the title of 'largest living land carnivore’ and there is very little to Choose between these two races of brown bear in terms of actual size. On 28 May 1948 Robert C Reeve of Anchorage-shot an enormous male near Cold Bay which measured 10ft 3-05m note to tail. It's weight was estimated at I600-I700lb 726-771 kg (skin 193-51b 88 kg) and judging from photographic evidence this was not exaggerated. Reeve said the bear had recently cone out of hibernation and carried little or no fat, and lie believed that the animal would have scaled at least 1850lb 839kg at the end of the summer Another out sized male shot by Harold McCracken (1957) near frosty Peak at the western end of the Alaska Peninsula in November 1916 weighed an estimated 1600lb 726kg. The skin of this animal measured 11 ft 4in 3-45m nose to tail and l0ft 6in 3-2m across the outstretched front paws. In June 1909 Dr J Wylie Anderson shot a male on Unimak Island which reportedly weighed 1320lb 599kg, but Rowland Ward (1928) gives the weight of this specimen as 1460lb 662kg and says its skin measured 11ft 3-35m in length. This concludes Guiness related material on Kodiak bears. There are records dealing with Alaska Peninsula bear, grizzly bear, black bear, Kamchatka brown bear, and Polar bear but as we understand it; there has been revised updates to Guiness BoWR and whether or not there has been significant record changes from the 1983 records is unclear at this time. Visitors (feel free to register) are welcomed to update accordingly. As noted, we know (Guiness has recognized) the late Goliath (below) to be the record holder for largest captive 2000lb bear (U.a.middendorffi). www.flickr.com/photos/mjohnso/3360670702/www.flickr.com/photos/73289930@N00/3131218183/

The source is credible but I have yet to confirm the information but purportedly in 1983 on Kodiak Island a bear was immobilized and weighed in at an outstanding 870 kg!

Regarding Guinness World Records, I have not reviewed the current literature. For any data driven post, please key on the date of citation publication (when citing literature) or with forum posts the recent dates (article-updates) should be given the greater priority.

What are the longest recorded head-body lengths for Kodiak and Polar bears? First of all: Why only kodiak bears? Aleutian Range en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aleutian_Range"The Aleutian Range with its 4000-foot peaks rising from the ocean’s edge makes the perfect backdrop for glassing giant coastal brown bear. This is truly Alaska’s trophy brown bear area. Brown Bear in these two units (9E and D) can grow to more than 11 feet square, with skulls measuring over 30 inches. More SCI record book brown bear have been taken from these two units than any others in Alaska. Our largest brown bear taken from here in 2008 measured 11.6 feet squared, with a skull measurement of 30.5 inches." www.adfg.alaska.gov/static/regulations/wildliferegulations/pdfs/gmu9.pdfFor largest(record) brown bears (up to 3 meter in straight line ,for largest(record) polar bears slightly over 3 meter in staright line Unfortunately ,I don't have any scientific publication about the longest recorded head-body lengths for Kodiak and Polar bears. I could be wrong, but the informations collected on shaggygod.proboards.com/ rather confirmed my suspicions.
