However, in a publication of 2000, Leopoldo Soibelzon, the leading South American bear expert, states that Arctotherium has only one known species, Arctotherium latidens.

Translation: "Although since 1857 more than five (5) species were described within the genus Arctotherium, currently one only considers the validity of Arctotherium latidens (Soibelzon et al. 2000)."
