Gray Fossil Site (Gray Fossil Site) fossil excavation work has been carried out for more than eight years, recently scientists are also here for the first time found the fossil of a short-faced bear (short-faced bear, Plionarctos). Such short-faced bears the earliest researchers from East Tennessee State University (East Tennessee State University) discovered in the year 2003, was only found a mandible and a few teeth fossils.
Just in the past few months, such short-faced bear fossils finally a new discovery, one with teeth incomplete skull fossil, and a short-faced bear maxilla and teeth.
Paleontologist Dr. Blaine Schubert said: "This is a significant finding, because Plionarctos fossil is a class of very, very rare short-faced bear fossils have been found in only a portion of the mandible and lower teeth, the discovery will help learn more about this type of short-faced bear look like in the end, what to eat, as well as with other bears kinship. "
Schubert added: "Plionarctos is belonging to the Inter-American another famous ancient short-faced bear tremarctines, a branch, including Ice Age giant short-faced bear, modern spectacled bear of South America, including all the late ancient short-faced bear tremarctines one therefore found the ancestors. Plionarctos short-faced bear fossils-depth study of the evolutionary history of the kind of magical animals is very important fossil material. "
Gray Fossil Site in 2000 first discovered in ancient times, there was a large animal, "Cemetery", in which a large number of prehistoric animals fall into. Here is the world discovered a single fossil origin the tapir (tapir) Fossil place, In addition, the fossils found here as well as horse, beaver, rhinoceros, crocodiles, lizards and snakes fossil also discovered two new species: Arctomeles dimolodontus (a badger), Pristinailurus bristoli (a kitten Bear).
Another significance of the Plionarctos short-faced bear fossils found for the first time to determine the age of the Gray Fossil Site, about dating back 450-700 million years or so.
(Note: That can't be right. Perhaps 4.50 – 7.00 million years ago.)
