REVISION TO AN EARLIER POST Quite a few people are familiar with the following video from the Shenyang Zoo. As I understand it, the controversial zoo has been closed because of poor housing conditions and animal diet related issues. After closer examination of the Youtube video, the subsequent still shots provide an example of a male lion and a female Yezo brown bear scrapping over food. Consistent with the problems of the zoo, both the lions and bears do not look healthy - their living enclosure is one issue of concern and they don't look to be enjoying a good diet as well. Different online photograph description details make exact age estimates of the animals difficult. For comparison, captive healthy - mature male Yezo brown bears

Focus: Extant Bears and Big CatsWhy the comparisons with big cats? Because in some circles it has become a popular pastime. If people want a better way to make size comparisons between big cats and bears then IMO an insightful option is to look at mixed animal events/conditions for analysis. Use Google and compare these bears to their wild counterparts. Compare gender and also importantly compare the age of the bears (e.g., sub adult, young adult, mature adult, etc - do the same for the big cats) then revisit and make again comparisons to some of the peddled online photoshop examples. To be continued...
