I am revising my earlier post. The reason for the revision are two-fold. One, this is a topic I have not invested serious time in so far as details go. Two, I have come across more material on the event. While a decent amount of material (not shared in earlier forum discussions) have been collected; personal scheduling issues force a delay to other relating newspaper materials. Still, I have enough to get things started so what will likely happen is that this thread (which will be unlocked) will be an ongoing one with new relating material to be shared in staggered communication likely months. As many of us are aware, there has been a lot made of the 1895 event. IMO, there have been many erroneous accounts. Here, it is time for review and to put accurate clarification on this matter including literature excerpts, original newspaper accounts, and yes.... pictures of the event and the two animal combatants. Above: Drawing reproduction of the two animal combatants. Stay tuned......

Update: good (earlier) success on the literature/articles hunt. In other words, we should be able to move faster on this topic than earlier anticipated. Allow time to process the data. Preliminary plans are to discuss the build up of the event, the fight itself, and then to wrap up with the aftermath - post fight notes.
More to come....

The event that was almost never to happen. As illustrated by the small collection of article clippings, there was a lot of interest in the event. To comb through all of the newspaper clippings would take a lot of time. In the next post, I will provide a recap highlighting the interesting/key points (there is a lot of overlap) from each of the articles. Understand, all of these are paid access articles/content. If there are questions on any of the materials I will be more than happy to answer them. To be continued...

There has been an influx/increase of event materials in recent months. Content wise nothing significant to report about as was often the case a century or so ago one story was regularly repeated in other newspapers. Rather, the issue is volume & organizing. Anyhow, please excuse the delays. Material info will be forthcoming in the very near future. Thank you for your understanding and continued interest.

"This evening, unless the law interferes, San Francisco sports are to enjoy a fight to the finish between the lion Parnell that killed his keeper a few months ago and a grizzly bear. Something over a thousand seats have been sold for this sport at $20 each. Nero, Hadrian, and other gentlemen of Rome who delighted in gladiatorial contests would find San Francisco quite homelike." "Colonel Boone, who conducts Boone's Arena at the Midwinter Fair, threatens to disregard the prohibitory edict of the managers of the exposition, regarding the proposal of the contests between the lion Parnell, and a bear. Boone says the contest is only a "wrestling match" between the animals. Apparently, there is going to be a fight and it will either be between the animals, or Boone and the Fair managers, as the Colonel continues to dispose of tickets at from $10 to $20 each." More to come, stay tuned......

The Build Up (continued)
WILL WRESTLE THE LION
Sandow Will Try His Strength With The King Of The Beasts
“San Francisco, May 10. --- Sandow is to wrestle with the lion Commodore, at Boone’s arena. The day for struggle has not yet been set. Commodore is one of the three most ferocious lions in the arena at the fair. He was with the lion Parnell in the attack that the three lions made on their keeper when Thierman was killed. The plan of the proposed wrestling match is to securely muzzle Commodore and to clip his claws before sending the lion into the arena and then to let Sandow seize and try to throw or hold him.”
“Colonel Boone’s lion Parnell is developing a disposition which is preparing him for a fate similar of Tip, the man killing elephant who was recently executed in New York, after killing eight men. Parnell caused the death of one of his keepers at the Mid-winter Fair a few months ago. The animal was kept in his cage until Sunday when he again took place among the other lions used by Boone in the caged arena. During the performance one of two dogs leaps over the lions, that being one of the tricks. Parnell grabbed the dog as he came down and crushed a few of his bones. The dog which was valued by Colonel Boone at several thousand dollars, died from the effects of the injuries. If Parnell’s ferocity continues he will eat up the show.”

Editorial attitudes toward the animal combatants
"There is a general demand that there should be a fight to a finish between that sulky murder, the lion Parnell, and the big California grizzly. There is no sympathy for the lion and grizzlies have never been known to be benefactors of mankind."
