Many years ago - I have acctually seen a book in the library where a kodiak bear was acctually biting a stranded beluga by the tail and ppulling it on land. Since, belugas do pass by the oocean near the island where kodiak and penisula alaskan brown bears live, this might be possible occassionally. Does anyone have the account?

I haven't read anything about it but it sounds plausible. Given the chance, the bear will pull to shore whatever it can for a nice meal.
Sometimes, nature is ^fortuitous^.

Cool video! I believe that stranded beluga was almost dead anyway. A kodiak bear is no doubt capable of killing a stranded beluga, however, as powerful and as strong as the kodiak bear is, it does not have the hooked claws like a polar bear to pull a beluga out of its breathing hole. Again barren ground grizzlies are learning to hunt seals...........

Harbor seals are prey item for coastal brown bears, Troyer (2005). They are not frequent occurrences but small numbers of Arctic including Russian brown bears have been hunting seals for a long time.
