Old World Fossils of the brown bear may occur in caves but apart from Great Britain are not common. Such sporadic finds as there are come from North Africa, Europe, and Asia. At the Peking man it of Choukoutien in China, some skulls and bones were found. These represent a very large type of brown bear and some of them are so immense that Dr. Pei Wen-Chung thought the bear might be a true cave bar. But the anatomical details agree better with the brown bear, so I think this bear must be Ursus arctos too (see figure 42).
42. The earliest fossil remains of the brown bear were found at the Peking
Man site at Choukoutien, near Beijing, China. The enormous size of the skull
led to its erroneous identification as a cave bear skull.
